About Laurie Nelson

I have provided therapy services to children, parents, adults, couples, and families since 2000. I specialize in providing play therapy to children who are 3 – 10 years of age. Developmentally, young children are not able to use talk therapy to discuss their feelings, gain insight, and plan changes in behavior. Play allows children a means of expression and the ability to master new tasks or difficult situations. Play therapy enhances this process by emphasizing themes in the play or offering alternative choices. In order to provide the most effective therapy, I consult regularly with parents or those in the parenting role with the child.

I also enjoy working with adults, whether individually, or in couples or families. I have deep respect for the willingness to seek help with life’s difficulties. It is a privilege for me to partner with you to define and work towards your goals. I offer alternative points of view, “what-ifs,” and experiments. I see therapy as a means to get “unstuck” by exploring alternative points of view and behaviors. I will work collaboratively with you to develop and reach your goals.

I graduated with a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa. I have studied play therapy extensively with Dr. Terry Kottman, developer of Adlerian play therapy. I have over 13 years of experience in providing therapy to children, individuals, couples, and families. My previous work in social service settings gives me a variety of experience with problem areas, as well as with the strengths and resiliency people bring to therapy.
